How do you use hard pastels?

Artists like to start by lightly drawing an outline of their sketch with pastels. You can then build your way up by applying more pressure and mixing with soft pastels (if you desire). To create blending effects, you can lightly feather your hard pastel in the area or use your finger to create blurred edges.

What is the difference between hard pastels and soft pastels?

Hard pastels contain more binder, chalk and less pigment, meaning they’re perfect for fine details, crisp lines and blending effects. Soft pastels are composed of more pigment and less chalk, perfect for smudged lines and intense rich applications of colour.

Can you erase pastel?

If you’re using pastel pencils and hard pastels, they can often be erased if the application is light. If you’re using soft or oil pastels, these cannot be completely erased due to the vivid pigments. We recommend applying light pressure when working with pastels, so they can be easily corrected with an art eraser
