Can you paint with printmaking ink?

Yes you can! Printmaking inks are a highly versatile medium, so you can paint and create block prints on a variety of different surfaces. These include fabrics, papers, canvases and more!

What are 3 materials used for printmaking?

You can create block prints on a range of surfaces with minimal art materials! Below we have listed some materials you can use to create magnificent prints (it’s a few more than 3 - but its super simple):

  • Printmaking fabric: The first material you will need is a surface for your print. Possible materials can include soft fabrics, paper, cards and more! We have a wide variety of high-quality printmaking paper at Art to Art to help you create spectacular prints every time.

  • Printmaking ink: Choose from a variety of vibrant inks here are Art to Art. Our inks are durable, light-fast and safe to use. These can be used for painting and block printing.

  • Paint roller: This is an optional step, but if you’re looking to cover your surface or woodblock evenley with paint, this is the tool for you. If you’re using a roller on paper, simply draw your designs into the paint with a clay tool or cotton bud.

  • Woodblock: A woodblock is recommended for block printing on a variety of fabrics. Block printing involves a wood block that is carved into a design. The wood block is then covered with ink and pressed into the fabric.

What ink is used for lino printing?

Lino printing is similar to woodcut printing, but instead a design is carved into linoleum and coated with ink. Paper is then placed on top of the design and pressed on, to transfer the artwork. Our wide range of printing inks at Art to Art can be used for lino printing as they’re designed for fabrics.

What is printmaking ink made of?

Printmaking ink is commonly oil based – using either soybean, linseed oil or petroleum distillate. Black inks are combined with carbon black and varnish, but coloured inks are dyed with compounds such as prussian blue and yellow lake.
